The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.

So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Regional Consequences

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

Regional Security Context

Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.

Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
